Drawing on the forms of studio pottery, his vessels suggest ceramics, while having the incredible thinness and lightness of carved wood. Their surfaces are built up through layers of lacquer and foraged local clays, creating subtle variations of colour and texture that make each piece unique. The beauty in Louis’s work is in the finely turned forms meeting the organic qualities of the materials. Louis is a young British woodworker based in Romsey in Hampshire, who works with locally sourced wood in close combination with other natural materials such as local wild clay and Japanese urushi lacquer.As pieces of lacquerware created with urushi, Louis’s works are rather unconventional. Their surfaces carry a matte, raw impression, rather than the more familiar sense of a perfectly polished, shiny exterior.Looking closer, it is as if each piece reveals a cosmic picture; like viewing a distant planet, or witnessing a nebula on the verge of forming stars.
